Porte vers le "Nouveau Monde", Rochefort a été dès le XVIIe siècle un arsenal aux multiples facettes, spécialisé dans les questions coloniales. Loin devant les autres, il apparaît comme un "arsenal-école" ou la "porte" menant aux emplois coloniaux.

From the 17th century onwards, thanks to its multi-faceted arsenal facilities, particularly well-adapted to colonial issues, Rochefort came to be known as the ‘Gate to the New World’. A leader in this field, far ahead of other sites, it soon developed into a sort of ‘pilot’-arsenal, specializing in colonial job training.
